English and Language Arts
Welcome to 4th grade English Language Arts! This year, we'll learn to be critical thinkers by analyzing authors' choices and intentions in writing. We will use novel studies to dive deep into narratives, and produce our own adventure and mystery stories. We'll analyze and critique informational texts, and engage in research projects to write our own articles. We'll also have fun exploring folklore, dramas, and poetry from diverse cultures. Fourth graders will also each have their own Chromebooks to use at school, and many of our lessons will incorporate technology based learning. In all areas, we'll engage in discussions that help us become independent problem solvers and decision makers and that help us value the perspective of others, all while understanding themes of and developing personal identity, courage, friendship, and accepting differences. Throughout the year, we'll work together to gain confidence in reading more complex texts, writing multi-paragraph essays independently, and engaging in creative projects that allow students unique expression and choice. We are so excited for this year!
Fourth grade mathematics is about (1) developing understanding and fluency with multi-digit multiplication, and developing understanding of dividing to find quotients involving multi-digit dividends; (2) developing an understanding of fraction equivalence, addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, and multiplication of fractions by whole numbers; and (3) understanding that geometric figures can be analyzed and classified based on their properties, such as having parallel sides, perpendicular sides, particular angle measures, and symmetry.
Fifth grade mathematics is about (1) developing fluency with addition and subtraction of fractions, and developing understanding of the multiplication of fractions and of division of fractions in limited cases (unit fractions divided by whole numbers and whole numbers divided by unit fractions); (2) extending division to two-digit divisors, integrating decimal fractions into the place value system and developing understanding of operations with decimals to hundredths, and developing fluency with whole number and decimal operations; and (3) developing understanding of volume.
This year we will be "Unlocking Histories Mysteries" by exploring America and many of the people, cultures, and countries that have contributed to the amazing place we call home today. Be prepared for group activities, presentations, EcoSTEM collaboration, debates, investigations, and above all, growth in your child's maturity and intellectual ability.
We will dive deeper into matter and its interactions, earth's systems, interactions, energy, and dynamics of ecosystems and much more!
